FWIW, I'm just "testing" at the moment.

I edited /usr/bin/thunderbird to add at the very beginning

export LC_TIME=C

I then found that in the T-Bird preferences you need to check the box in

Advanced--->Date and Time Formatting

Regional settings locale: und

Don't have the "Application locale" box checked.
