I did the back-up and the edits. I noted current stats on '/', /var/,
and /var/log/, re-booted, and looked again and the stats. No difference.
(sigh)
I forgot to un-comment the two of the 3 journald.conf that I edited.
Fixed it. Re-booted.
'/' increased from 20G to 23G avail (59% used to 52%).
/var/log/ dropped from 4.2G used to 1.4G used.

I see this as individual preferences.
I shut down each night to save on my electric bill, and hopefully to
save on system wear-and-tear.
My previous system got infected, which in turn caused me and others
serious problems, even a few years later. When I got this system (6
years ago), members of this list advised me to (among other things) keep
up with security patches and fixes. The best way for me to do this is
to patch regularly; I chose weekly. Otherwise, I'll forget or keep
putting it off.
Now that I know how to do this, and since I backed up the default file,
I can adjust my chosen settings if these don't work well.
I thank those who helped with this.
