I don't use Gnome or Xfce.  I use KDE.

KDE doesn't use gvfs-mtp as mtp support is builtin to dolphin.  This support
had been
broken.  But, I tried it again today and it is now working just fine.

On KDE it seems that the file system of the phone is not actually mounted.  It
seems only
sockets are used and dophin keeps track of the file system structure.

egreshko 17233 15213  4 18:06 ?        00:00:01 /usr/bin/dolphin mtp:/Galaxy S6
egreshko 17246 15213  0 18:06 ?        00:00:00 mtp.so [kdeinit5] mtp
local:/run/user/1029/klauncherrVOwXM.1.slave-socket
local:/run/user/1029/dolphindIHuks.3.slave-socket

It is very possible that gvfs-mtp does something similar.
