The MacOS widget (formally called Key Caps and now called Keyboard Viewer) allows me to *see* the keycaps in the onscreen keyboard image change as I press the Ctrl, Alt etc. key combinations, to show what the resulting input *would be* if I typed them. I don't mind it also entering the character if I click on it, but that's not the point.
I'm not quite sure what you're meaning, but in gnome settings, region & language, you can bring up a keyboard picture that will highlight keys as you press them.
