AFAIK nedit doesn't support UTF8.  As a matter of fact if you start if from the 
command
line to edit a file with that symbol.

[egreshko@f29bk ~]$ nedit sym
nedit: the current locale is utf8 (en_US.UTF-8)
nedit: changed locale to non-utf8 (en_US)

Along with that, nedit uses xorg-x11-fonts which I don't think have UFT8 
support.
