Thinking about this, I wonder if the new firmware set something in the
device memory that the old firmware is not aware of? The old firmware
loads, but the area causing the problem isn't touched by it, so it
still has the problem.  Pure speculation.  I think this would be a long
shot, but disastrous if true.
