Ok, so it tries the DVD first and then falls back to playing whatever it finds. I've never tried that before.

And/or maybe just "file *" in the directory?

output_file.mov:     ISO Media, Apple QuickTime movie, Apple QuickTime (.MOV/QT)

I suppose that's useful to verify that it really is a .mov file, but my point is to find out what codecs are being used.
