It isn't clear to me if your initial problem was related to reading or writing a DVD. That said, in another message you indicated that "Wodim works just fine". Well, when it comes to k3b, it uses (at least on my system) wodim as its method for cdrecord. Check the settings in your k3b to verify what it is configured to use. I've not had any issues with k3b in the past.
