Google irc chat, read the wikipedia article to find out what it is. Google pidgin irc. Select some result and follow instructions. Start pidgin. Add an account. Choose IRC protocol, give a username and an IRC address (irc.freenode.net). Add a Buddy List entry for each channel you want to follow (Buddies -> Add Chat... -> #foo).
