I had a similar problem a couple of weeks ago. I only scan
perhaps once a year, but my trusty old Canoscan N650U is
always up to the job and scanning has been painless i Fedora
for me.

Well, recently, no matter what I did, reboot, reload the
module, etc, nothing worked, not even importing into Gimp,
running xsane, nothing.

Then, I tried skanlite and it worked like a charm! I think you
also need kf5-libksane and sane-backends-drivers-scanners,
but, if so, they should be pulled in as dependencies.
