I run F12 on hardware that is older than yours. During the heavy
development cycle on the nouveau driver some time ago, I had some
issues. Nouveau was changing rapidly and rather than open BZs on a
moving target, I just switched to the nv driver. It works a treat for
my old hardware. I don't run any 3d, it seems to work OK for
everything else.
It's unlikely that any changes made to current drivers are going to
enhance my experience on my old hardware, and I don't feel like dealing
with peripheral hassles so I haven't tried the nouveau driver since.

I used system-config-display to create an xorg.conf that I put
in /etc/X, X11?. I just made the driver in it nv. Haven't had an
issue since.
