The email retention policy is a function available in T-Bird. It isn't an IMAP server function. Simply right-click on any folder and select "Properties". One of the tabs will be "Retention Policy" which you can set for each folder. I have no problems with this feature. Changes made to the policy may not have immediate effect but can be "forced" by right-clicking on the folder and selecting "Compact".
