I mentioned about the default. On desktops, numlock defaults to on, but on laptops, possibly depending on whether or not there is a separate number pad, the default is off. I'm pretty sure it's not specific to Gnome. On my laptop, the numlock being on would mean I would have to turn it off to be able to use the laptop normally.
