If you try to play a .wav file using
aplay -c 0 [some.wav]
what happens?

Are your speakers plugged into the correct jack on your card?

Is the volume turned up when you bring up
alsamixer -c 0
?

Have you got pavucontrol installed?

What does it show when you try to play a sound file using a pulseaudio
aware application like audacious?
