Just guessing.  But this sounds like you have memory problems.  Shut
the system down completely.  Then make sure the interior of the
computer is clean, and re-seat all the memory chips. Careful of
static.  Try a reboot.

If it still fails, boot into a memory test. Off the top of my head, I
can't remember the command name.  I've seen it recommended here on the
list recently for someone who was having booting problems.  You should
be able to find it with a web search.
