for some LaserJet printers? This is normally the solution needed in this case.
He said he found updated printer firmware at the HP site, and after
installing that his problem disappeared.
Problem solved, I was just too stupid: in MATE Control Center then in
Print Settings > HP-Color-LaserJet-CP3525 > Unlock > Properties and then
in the Policies tab, there's a box named "Enabled" that needed to be
checked. No idea why this box was unchecked (it certainly wasn't me, I
suspect it happened during an update), but checking it again solved
everything.
