Right click on the little triangle next to the clock on the system tray and go to "System Tray 
Settings".  Under "Extra Items" make sure you have "Networks" checked.

I didn't have any of those packages installed, they now are. Given that from the description plasma-nm looks like the package that provides the functionality, why is it not installed when kde is added after installing from the live dvd? I had to do a reboot after installing the packages for "Networks" to appear in the "Extra Items" list, which is now ticked and the icon I am looking for is now present. Thankyou for all your help.
