I've never had any trouble handling updates to the kernel with the NVIdia
173 series drivers through yum. With DKMS and the relevent kmod/akmod
available, it's never failed me yet.
When I try to update by other means, then I have trouble with kernel
modules.
Perhaps you're missing a package or two to handle the modules.
