I ran into the same issue with my Motorola and 3Skypephone handsets being paired, but not able to connect with NetworkManager. I hacked together http://www.eridani.co.uk/rfselect/rfselect.tcl which opens an RFCOMM session to the selected mobile phone, and with that connected the Mobile Broadband entries in NetworkManager appear and connect successfully.
