To another modem? Just kidding. Honestly, if you can't see it through minicom, there is no chance that kannel will see it. If you are getting no response from minicom, it could mean 2 things:
1) You are talking to the wrong port. Check dmesg again. USB modems ussually map to more than one serial port. One of them might be the controller, which doesn't respond. 2) You are communicating at the wrong speed. Any time you type "AT" in minicom you should get "OK". So the CGU-03 must be a clone of that. I've tried leaving modemtype as auto in my config and including modems.conf. device opened speed set to 115200 --> ^M --> AT^M --> AT^M --> AT^M closing device opening device ... and the speed just keeps decreasing i've tried setting the modem type to siemens_tc35 and siemens_m20 with the same result. I cannot open this modem using minicom, i don't receive any errors but i never receive a prompt or any responses to anything i type into minicom. Where should i go from here? The next step I would take is to grab the GSM AT specs and try talking to it using minicom or similar. Alternatively just config kannel to use ttyUSB0 (using default init strings, etc) and see how you get on. The website isn't very friendly either, can't find the init strings for this modem. When I plug it into my machine, dmesg returns usb 2-1 FTDI USB Serial Device converter now attached to ttyUSB0 Where should I start debugging, anybody ever configured this modem???
