This is a very frequent discussion topic in this list. In general you can
see a list of certified modems in modems.conf.
Having said that, people seem to think that Huawei E226 USB is the best
value usb modem, and Wavecom Fastrack Supreme 20 the best serial. Mobile
phones that support AT commands can still be used, but there are questions
about stability, and lots of them have issues with dlrs.
Serial modems are always supported. USB modems are a bit faster, but need to
have drivers for them. Linux, freeBSD are fine, Solaris doesn't support
them.
