Just to add that you can find a selection of working and tested serial mobiles in modems.conf.

Sure

You can use any gsm phone that supports standard AT commands. Note
that there are some USB gsm phones that support AT commands, an USB
driver is needed for Linux.

Sony USB phones  works with linux. I 'm not sure about other brands/models.
