Measuring SMS gateway effectiveness

Our set-up uses a number of gateway providers (all via SMPP), and I would particularly like to be able to measure their MT effectiveness in terms of:
* Speed of delivery
* Reliability of delivery (i.e. success rate)

One possible way to do this would be to send a bunch of messages out, all with delivery reports on. Then monitor when the delivery reports are received. [Whilst this isn't a particularly accurate method, it is at least *a* method].

Does anyone have any experience of measuring MT gateway effectiveness?
