Well, most forum softwares allow the user to automatically get email notification when somebody replies to a particular thread. I personally prefer to log in once in a while but at least the feature exists. Concerning authentication, either forums or mailing lists are subscribe-based so there is no issue (newsgroups are awful but it is not the subject here :-)
