Some.  Mono ringtones, operator logos yes, though doing this seems to be
poorly documented at this time (much of it is manufacturer-specific
black magic).  Kannel is not an MMSC (yet?) so it cannot at this time be
used to send MMS-based content directly.

I once helped set up a temporary, but very high volume SMS service
involving all three cellphone companies in our country.  All of this
traffic passed through a single server, an old dual-processor PIII
system running a recent CVS version of Kannel on Linux.  At its peak, it
was processing 200 messages per second without breaking a sweat (it was
fairly lightly loaded actually).
