Hey Nayak, there is an on-going KIP in the community about deprecating zookeeper: https://cwiki.apache.org/confluence/display/KAFKA/KIP-500%3A+Replace+ZooKeeper+with+a+Self-Managed+Metadata+Quorum It should be a good place to raise your question about making consensus algorithm pluggable in the future.
