Yes. The expectation is that brokers are backwards compatible: new broker releases should work with old clients (to 0.8, but not back to 0.7).
The opposite, backwards compatible clients, is generally not supported: new clients may not always work with old brokers (except for, *cough* *cough*, kafka-python, which does maintain backwards compatible client releases from 0.10 to 0.8).
