client y is a http server but i dont want to expose client y to client x. I am new to this Apache httpd server so I dont know whether it should be configured as a forward proxy or reverse proxy. Right now i am configuring it as reverse proxy but it doesnt work.

The point is that Apache will forward a HTTP *request* to the "client y", and expect it to act like a HTTP server. Unless your "client y" is really a HTTP server, it will not work.
