Hmmm.. Hi Eric,

Ok so I added the 1024 option, but were still seeing a lot of memory
consumption:

28880 apache 15 0 432m 169m 5636 S 0.0 1.4 0:42.64 httpd
28879 apache 18 0 431m 169m 5556 S 0.0 1.4 2:31.04 httpd
28876 apache 15 0 431m 169m 5644 S 0.0 1.4 0:18.69 httpd
28874 apache 15 0 429m 167m 5668 S 0.0 1.4 0:16.55 httpd
28877 apache 15 0 420m 158m 5608 S 0.0 1.3 0:23.42 httpd
28881 apache 15 0 420m 158m 5592 S 0.0 1.3 0:15.02 httpd
28878 apache 15 0 419m 157m 5636 S 0.0 1.3 0:15.33 httpd
28875 apache 15 0 412m 150m 5708 S 0.0 1.2 0:30.47 httpd
 5984 apache 15 0 407m 145m 5620 S 0.0 1.2 0:07.63 httpd
 8554 apache 15 0 405m 142m 5592 S 0.0 1.2 0:05.25 httpd

So I guess there is some leak somewhere..

Far too large, it's per-thread. Try 1MB.
