At certain times the web page calls the same xmlhttp request 5 times a
second and downloads a jpeg of approx 28k five time a second. I
expected CPU to be about
15 - 20%. Top reveals ...

I now have 2 x apache processes each pulling 24.6% ie 50% of the CPU !
This is causing real problems. Has anyone any ideas as to why the load
has increases exponentially ?
Can anyone give me a pointer as to where to look to solve this ?
I am not the specialist here, but just looking at your two top displays
above, am I right in suspecting that you are running this XmlHttpRequest
test from a firefox browser which runs on the same machine as the Apache
you are testing ? if that is the case, it would be competing for
resources (of which you do not tell us much) with Apache, and that may
skew your results quite a bit. Can you run Firefox on another machine,
accessing the same server, and check the results then ?
Maybe also tell us which machine this is, and how much memory it really
has ?
