There's an issue with 2.2.9's configure https://issues.apache.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=45221#c6 Running ./buildconf should solve it.

I suggest you use -lssl_extra -lcrypto_extra, provided by SUNWcry for higher level encryption.
