As a rewrite rule that could get very hairy.
If you are running a server where you use something like mod_perl or
mod_python
i would set up a handler and do in said language, be MUCH easier.

It seems like a relatively simple thing, but the number of digits in
the source URI could be anything between 1 and 18, so the regex starts
getting a bit hairy.
Before I get too desperate, perhaps someone with potent regex chops
would like to take a shot at it!
