For most people, it is much quicker to ask someone who knows than to search and comprehend the often cryptic documentation. Frankly when searching for a solution to one of my problems, I often just skip over the docs as I know a google search will turn up a better explanation of what I need to do. If all else fails I read try to find the info in the documentation. This is also why it is so important for list archives to be indexed by google (and other search engines. For some really serious problems, where I only found the answer on some obscure website, I will post a message to a usenet group or mailing list with the problem and my solution.
