Maybe I'm mistaken but I believe you need to leave at least 1 entry from the
previous file to retain the last job number. Otherwise, it restarts from 1.

You're welcome! As Tina pointed out, you can use logrotate as well (assuming
it's available on your OS), but IIRC you have to set it to do "copytruncate"
rather than the default move action (or maybe that's a memory remnant from an
old version of GE?).
