Just though I'd let everyone know I managed to get Son of Grid Engine working from this download: https://arc.liv.ac.uk/downloads/SGE/releases/8.1.9/. I discovered that the Ubuntu repository package version is missing the $SGE_ROOT/utilbin directory! No wonder it didn't work...
