I made some tests by changing the known hosts in NIS and accordingly 
host_aliases. Besides the tools gethostby{name,addr} also the qmaster accept a 
newly added host by the just defined alias. For me it appears be to be read 
live.

Maybe it's different when it cached already an older name, and would reread 
either only on a startup or after the time out as you mentioned. So both 
observations could be right.
