I have started to figure it out, though not completely. When I click on the icon, it shows me an open file. for some reason they have been minimized. The minimized file appears on the desktop, but it goes in the upper left hand corner on my dual screen system, right where trash is. and it is hard to tell, but I can then drag it and enlarge it, and things are back to normal. What is still unclear is what caused this to happen, for I have no awareness of anything I did differently.
