Recent Documents and its related RecentDocsThumbnail (at 5.2) are configurable in Expert Configuration (Tools -> Options -> Advanced: Expert Configuration
Open the Expert Configuration dialog and search for PickListSize -- default is 25, setting to 0 effectively disables the main menu File -> Recent Documents split list or the new (at 5.2) RecentDocsThumbnail -- boolean default is True. When set false the StartCenter thumbnail views will not be rendered, and only ODF place holder icons will show for items on the recent documents list. In addition to these two internal LibreOffice history elements--the OS and desktop environment may provide shell hooks to recent items.
