Hi Hugh,
I am not a Ubuntu user but I can share an experience with Fedora. I
remember running into a similar problem but I can't remember exactly
what. After "cd desktop-integration" have a look at the contents of the
folder, eg. I see:
[tim@petunia ~]$ ls
LibreOffice_4.0.2.2_Linux_x86_rpm/RPMS/desktop-integration/
libreoffice4.0-freedesktop-menus-4.0.2-2.noarch.rpm
libreoffice4.0-mandriva-menus-4.0.2-2.noarch.rpm
libreoffice4.0-suse-menus-4.0.2-2.noarch.rpm
In my case there is no Fedora specific installer so I chose the
freedesktop-menus RPM. Maybe if you try to "sudo dpkg" only the .deb
file for Ubuntu (or freedesktop) it might do the trick. I think you are
trying to install versions for other distros as well as yours.
Cheers

The above DEBSdpkg command does the first part of the installation
process. To complete the process, you also need to install the desktop
integration packages. To do this, change directory to the
"desktop-integration" directory that is within the "DEBS" directory,
using the following command:
cd desktop-integration
Now run the dpkg command again:
sudo dpkg -i *.deb
The installation process is now completed, and you should have icons
for all the LibreOffice applications in your desktop's
Applications/Office menu."
I get the following error message after successfully installing the
first part according to the readme txt, and trying to install the
desktop integration packages:
hugh-u@hugh-u:~/Downloads/LibreOffice_4.0.2.2_Linux_x86-64_deb/DEBS$
cd desktop-integration

Please help if you can. Thank you
