Hi :)
MariaDb is a drop-in replacement for MySql.   MySql is a very famous database
program that can be used as back-end for Base.  So Base can be used as the
front-end for MariaDb or MySql databases with varying degrees of success.
MySql is owned and managed by Oracle.  MariaDb is a community organisation a
bit like TDF.
Regards from
Tom :)

The MariaDB project is pleased to announce the immediate availability of
MariaDB 5.5.24. This is a stable (GA) release. It includes MariaDB
5.3.7 and MySQL 5.5.24.

This version of MariaDB introduces new RPM packages for RHEL 5, CentOS
5 & 6, and Fedora 16. We have also created YUM repositories for those
distributions. Setup instructions are available here:
    http://kb.askmonty.org/en/installing-mariadb-with-yum/

We are also now offering packages for BSD 9, MacOS X 10.5 (will be
available within 24 hours), and Ubuntu 12.04 "Precise" (via our Ubuntu
APT repository).

The MariaDB-specific book, MariaDB Crash Course, by Ben Forta, is an
excellent way to learn more about MariaDB. This book - for beginner to
intermediate level users - will get you up and running with MariaDB,
even if you've never used a database before. More information is
available at: http://forta.com/books/0321799941/

MariaDB includes a User Feedback plugin. This plugin is disabled by
default. If enabled, it submits basic, completely anonymous MariaDB
usage information. This information is used by the developers to track
trends in MariaDB usage to better guide development efforts.

If you would like to help make MariaDB better, please add
"plugin-load=feedback.so" to your my.cnf file! On Windows, add
"feedback=ON" to your my.ini file, or click the checkbox during the
installation of the MSI package.

See http://kb.askmonty.org/en/user-feedback-plugin for more information.
