I tried searching for a bug report about the change but couldn't find
one. I'm surprised that a change like this doesn't have one. The only
thing I could find is:

But that seems to be only related to the entire page background/shadow.

FWIW: I agree that this is a regression & that a user option to turn the
margin lines on/off should be added. I'd recommend filing a bug report
so that the issue gets documented & into the report system.
