Thanks Alex, but DataGridItemRenderer is an MX component, and I'm using a Spark Datagrid. The Spark GridItemRenderer doesn't have the validateNow() function. I've tried various other functions, but, honestly, I don't know that the component's lifecycle is, so it's a bit confusing.
