Hi all,

My concern was about security warnings not to use the qemu-img resize command
with running VMs.

I was not aware, that there is also a libvirt command that may be used to do
secure online resizing.

virsh blockresize domain path-to-image size

Should work securely.

Sorry to bother you. But I banged my head on this several times in the last
months and was very disappointed not to securely being able to resize volumes.
I was not aware of the libvirt option.

Kind regards,

Melanie

Betreff: qemu volume online resize

Hi all,

I am writing to this mailing list with some KVM/qemu specific question, that is
not directly connected to CloudStack. But hope to find the KVM expertise here,
to maybe solve my problem.😉

We are using some plain KVM hypervisors to host our CloudStack VMs (cloudstack
management, cloudstack database and some additional services like DNS, email,
etc.).

When resizing volumes in this plain qemu/KVM environment all documentation I
checked warns, that this should only be done offline – with a powered down VM.
Actually we did often successfully online resize volumes anyway.

We are using volume in the raw format.

If it is necessary, we will change our procedure to only offline resizing
volumes.

But does anyone here have knowledge in this topic and can advice what the
actual risk is and if online resizing might be secure after maybe taking some
precautions?

Kind regards,

Melanie
