I would expect the same distro in the first place. Preferably the same
version also, but then I'd expect there to be an upgrade path from e.g.
precise to trusty etc.

I can't speak for CS specific, but given KVM, the thing is to be able to
migrate vm's, and there you especially need processors with the same
capabilities.​​
