After looking at the source code I understand better what's happening. Camel uses JAXB to unmarshal FromDefinition which naturally doesn't execute any SPeL. So unless unmarshalling is done using only Spring namespace handlers in conjunction with FactoryBeans SPeL interpreter will not run within attribute values.
