In this situation (where a message has been dispatched to a client but the client has not yet acknowledged that message) the broker will mark that message as being "in delivery." You can see this in the admin console, for example, by looking at the "Delivering Count" of the queue in question. The message won't be available to other consumers, but it also won't be removed completely from the queue. Once the consumer or the connection is closed then any messages in this state will be fully restored to the queue for other consumers to receive.
