Ok, got it;

I created a config file by:
./bin/activemq setup /etc/default/activemq

There I put a line
ACTIVEMQ_OPTS_MEMORY="-Xms500m -Xmx500m"

Works fine.

I couldn't find anything using google, the activeMq homepage or by reading the activemq.xml config file.

Propably it is so easy right in front of me and I just cannot see it.
