Ok so here is where the white rabbit went. If I add the autocomplete inside of a hidden div ("display: none;") element and then make it visible it will not display the icon. If the div is set to be displayed ("display: block;") then it displays fine. After load, if I hide the div and make it visible again it still displays correctly.
