Using Message Resource Keys in Tiles Definitions

I know the following is not possible because the put tag does not have a 
key attribute but can the same result be achieved in another way?

<definition name=".mainLayout" path="/layouts/mainLayout.jsp">
   <put name="title" key="mainLayout.title" />
</definition>
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.
