I don't think it's possible, assuming I'm not wrong :)
The only possibility I can think of is if the file you are returing is something that can be displayed embeded in the page, you might be able to "surround" it with Javascript to automatically open the print dialog.
Even just talking about a Windows shortcut, the program that is displaying the file would have to have a command line switch to automatically print, which I'd be willing to bet is what you remember doing with a shortcut.
If you could find a way to do that from a browser, then maybe, but I suspect it would either (a) require a per-client configuration (i.e., maybe you could configure a file type handler with the switch or something along those lines) or (b) require a custom viewing program that you have some control over and can do some hacking with.

Do you mean you want the file to automatically print, or display the print dialog? If so, I don't believe that's possible.
